ive looked at this site every few months for a while and was just shocked to see my trailer included in modern romas 5. its the tan and cream bunks at the bottom of the page. i cant think exactly when i took these photos but presume it was when it was for sale in 2006. we advertised it in benidorm where we had pulled it 1800 miles from nottinghamshire.we then moved from benidorm to italy 2000 miles towing this 26ft trailer,it took us 4 days ! we sold it and it is now on a residential camp in pisa, italy.ive now got a tabbert and i now realise what a mistake it was to sell it. our roma was built in 2001 and never had a scratch inside or out. cant say the same about our 2 year old tabbert.!

Hi

Well at long last i have managed to trace the make of mt old family caravan. It must have been a Vickers Lonsdale.

My Dad bought it around 1959 new and we still had it in perfect condition in 1979. Never any water ingress poplems and the interier was like new.

We towed it with a Rover 90 it was a heavy van i remember.

Dad always commented how it was a gypsy style van with fantastic interior cabnet made with a top beam construction, we all loved it and it has many happy memories of holidays in Devon, Norfolk and Scotland.

When we were all away from home Dad had not used it in a few years and offered it to any one of us but I was then a very poor student ( still am) and could not afford to tow it down to Devon wher I was living Dad gave it away. It had lived on a site in Yorkshire for 15 years in Topcliff by the river nr the Black Bull pub.

It was two tone outside with leaded windows a beautiful van.

I have recently bought a Bailey Senitor and am waiting to head out again on the open road if I can stay ahead of the ballifs.

Would anyone know how much a van like that would have cost I seen to remember Dad saying it was around £600 in 1958/59 not sure what that would be in todays money??

Anyway a great site to see again the style and shape of the graetest caravan ever built!

Peter

You might get a call from a man I met at the 'showout' day, he asked for your number as he'd seen the Buccaneer you made for me and the others on the site.
Fantastic website. I have...

Fantastic website. I have been glued to this for days. Although not traveller myself, I have fond memories of these eyecatching trailers around sites in the West Midlands as a young kid in the 70's and its good to see them now being finally valued as they should be, restored and bought back on the road. Maybe the last time I saw one of these being used was in showmens circles or dilapidated ones in the hands of new age travellers in the early 90's. I live abroad now, so nothing like this where I am now. Will just have to make do with your great pictures. Please keep them coming.

Incidentally, I remember one spectacular and possibly unique medium sized Roma trailer in particular up for sale in the Midlands with gold plated bandings and fittings. Price then was 16,000, at a time when the 70's Vickers etc could be bought for quite a lot less. I think it was very late 80's or so. Anybody know of its whereabouts?

My thanks go out to all involved in making this a great site.

Thank you for this wonderful...

Thank you for this wonderful site; I'm not a born gypsy, or a traveller, but me,my husband and our four terriers became victims of the housing boom when our landlord re-let our house for £150 extra a month which we could't afford and we became homeless.

We squashed into a touring van for two years until we saved up for the van of our dreams, having become aquainted with others like us. We have lived in our Roma GT for nearly 3 years now and love her! I wonder how many others there are like us who aren't gypsy by birth, but have become used to living like we do because of circumstances but wouldn't change it for anything!......Are we called anything, I wonder?!.....

Our lifestyle isn't romantic - Its hard in the winter and we don't (& won't!) have water in the trailer so we have to use the outside wash blocks - but people who know we live in a gypsy caravan think it idyllic and envy us! - we don't envy them with their huge house loans!

I think, because we now have few personal belongings and none of the 'junk' associated with living in a house, it has made our outlook very different ; we treasure our Roma; she has bought us closer together and reinforced the importance of 'people' and not 'things'........a sobering thought for many of the greedy people like our ex-landlord who are now reaping what they sowed in the boom years!......

Where as 6 years ago we would have fought to stay in a house - now I would fight for the right to live in a trailer, and can completely identify with born&bred gypsies fighting for the right to keep their traditions.

....You never know, a new generation of trailer-dwellwers may be forming as we speak!......
